Applying patches

Because the Windows Installer command line allows the application of a patch at the time of the initial installation, patches can easily be applied when the software is installed using a script. The advantage here (besides the fact that no patched administrative install is necessary), is that future patches can be applied to the computers directly either via Interactive Update or by using another script. The installations are seen as a normally-patched installation and not a patched administrative install.

While Interactive Update is the best method to update the installs, it's also possible to use a script to apply a patch to an existing install.
